FYI, Dragon Boat Racing actually began 2000 years ago. More recently, Dr. Don McKenzie, a sports medicine physician at the University of British Columbia, launched Abreast in a Boat in 1996 to test the myth that repetitive upper body exercise in women treated for breast cancer encourages lymphedema. He believed that following a special exercise and training program would not increase the risk, but would actually improve quality of life. Dr. McKenzie's theory proved correct. Since 1996, hundreds of breast cancer survivors across Canada have formed dragon boat teams, and are paddlingand racing regularly, promoting good health and fun.

I will be in PEI the last two weeks of August. Did anything come of your post to see if there was interest in a breast cancer survivor team for PEI? If so, would I be able to join you for a practice?

Hi Sheila - The conversation you saw was back in 2011, and nothing came of it to my knowledge. Eileen, who had posted it, does not work with EPSI any more, but I don't think there ever was a team created. I checked on the Internet and couldn't find anything for PEI for 2015. The lady from Bosom Buddies was from Nova Scotia. Sorry about that - wish it could have happened. Hope you really enjoy your holiday on PEI!!! Take care. Gloria
