AVIVA COMMUNITY FUND

Hello:

East Prince Seniors Initiative has submitted a proposal to the Aviva Community Fund for a project we are calling SOS - Supporting Our Seniors:  Helping Summerside Seniors Live in their Own Homes
Losing independence is a leading fear among seniors.  For many, having to move out of their own homes is one of their biggest concerns.  About one-third of older adults experience a fall every year and most of those happen at home, where they are easily preventable with slight modifications.

SOS - Supporting our Seniors is a project of the East Prince Seniors Initiative aimed at working with seniors in our community at greatest risk of having to move out of their homes and providing them with the support they need to remain independent for as long as possible.  SOS will bring together the seniors, health care professionals (e.g., occupational therapists) and home repair experts to identify and provide fix-ups that will decrease the risk of falls, increase confidence, keep seniors at home and reduce the need to move to institutionalized nursing care.

SOS will allow seniors to have a free risk-assessment done of their homes to identify potential hazards that might lead to accidents and injuries.   Local contractors will be engaged to fix problems or install safety equipment such as bathtub grab bars or stair railings to reduce the likelihood of falls.
The intent of SOS is to provide those seniors who need it with fix-ups that will make their homes safer, reduce the incidence of injuries, and maintain their independent living.

Finally, the City of Summerside is embarking on an initiative to have our community qualify as an Age Friendly City and we believe SOS - Supporting our Seniors can play a major role in achieving that objective.

The Aviva Fund is based on votes, and EPSI is asking you to consider voting for our project.   The steps to vote are attached.   You can vote daily from as many valid email addresses as you have.     We truly believe that our project will be a benefit to many seniors who would like to stay in their homes and who just need a little assistance to make it easier for them to do so.    We appreciate your support!!    And, you can help out even more by spreading this message to your contacts (either email or Facebook).    Thank you so much!

THANK YOU!!!

A little update on our Volunteer Expo and Wellness Fair: We were SO pleased that the weather cooperated. We ended up having 46 exhibitors (which was wonderful). They provided the public with all kinds of information on programs, services, and volunteer opportunities. Our Expo committee was hoping for 200 people and ended up with 320 people registering at our welcome desk. So that was great! A GIANT thank you to exhibitors, sponsors, donors of prizes, and volunteers with the event. A special thanks to committee members Marsha Ratelle, Pat Poirier, Mary Olscamp, Mary Lynn Arsenault, Anne MacEwen, and Ellan Dickieson. What a team!!!! Event volunteers that day included Linda Roberts, Harvey MacEwen, Margie Dyment, and Paul MacAlduff. Boy, when a group like this comes together, it can't help but be successful. Thanks to all of you from the bottom of my heart.

COMING SOON!!

On Tuesday, October 15, we will be hosting the first in a four-part lecture series called “Let’s Talk About Wellness and Work Towards Getting Motivated”. The series is being coordinated by Simply for Life, and the first presentation will be “Getting Nutritionally Fired Up” by Jillian Wood, nutritionist. It starts at 7 o’clock, and everyone is welcome.

On Wednesday, October 16 at 2 p.m. the Alzheimer Society will be hosting a CafĂ© for caregivers, family members, and supporters. This promises to be a relaxing and informative session – everyone is invited to attend -- hope to see you there!

Please remember that sessions are free and open to everyone!
