EPSI Volunteer Barry Mills wins Mayor's Good Neighbor Award
Congratulations to Barry Mills!
Retired Cavendish Farms employee Barry Mills of Wilmot Valley has been selected as this year's recipient of the Mayor's Good Neighbour Award. Mills began his volunteer efforts more than 25 years ago, volunteering with the Community School program, he was a volunteer with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization for five years and canvasses for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Mills has been an active volunteer with the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen in serving and food preparation for the last three years, and is also a volunteer liaison with the soup kitchen and the Central Street Christian Church. He is a Deacon and volunteer caretaker of the Central Street Christian Church, and a member of the board of directors for the People's Cemetery.
He continues to support events in Summerside as a shuttle driver for special events. He is a volunteer with the East Prince Senior's Initiative and has recently been honoured by the organization as a person making a significant difference in the community. Mills is a volunteer at the Harbourfront Theatre and is a member of their Junior Board of Directors. In his nomination for the award it states he is a "truly generous person with a sense of kindness and compassion. Barry always says yes and is really there for Summerside to assist in any way he can."
Summerside Mayor Basil Stewart said he is pleased with the selection committee's choice.
"Mr. Mills is an outstanding neighbour to Summerside who spends much of his time volunteering to make our city a better place," Stewart said. "I congratulate him on this award and I thank him for his dedication to our city."
This is the 25th year for this award presentation, which recognizes individuals, groups, communities or organizations based outside city limits that have been "good neighbours" to Summerside. Stewart instituted the award in memory of former mayor of the Town of Summerside, the late Frances O. Perry. The award will be presented in conjunction with Summerside's 16th anniversary celebrations on Friday, April 1 at 7 p.m. in council chambers on the second floor of Summerside City Hall. The public is invited to attend.

Living longer is not Anti-Aging
"Really, if you want to live longer, it's got to come from inside out," McDonald concludes. "You can't apply it on the outside with a cream, you can't swallow it in a pill, and you certainly can't have a gadget do it for you."

Anyone interested in Dragon Boat Races in PEI?
Having been approached by Breast Cancer Survivors regarding Chinese Dragon Boat racing, we wanted to put the idea out to you, the public, to think about bringing this to PEI again.
FYI, Dragon Boat Racing actually began 2000 years ago. More recently, Dr. Don McKenzie, a sports medicine physician at the University of British Columbia, launched Abreast in a Boat in 1996 to test the myth that repetitive upper body exercise in women treated for breast cancer encourages lymphedema. He believed that following a special exercise and training program would not increase the risk, but would actually improve quality of life. Dr. McKenzie's theory proved correct. Since 1996, hundreds of breast cancer survivors across Canada have formed dragon boat teams, and are paddlingand racing regularly, promoting good health and fun.
So let us know what you think.....also, take a look at the attached website and video "Power of the Paddle" to get the real thrill of this incredible experience. Enjoy!

A Tribute to a Wonderful Woman!
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Glover Family as we mourn the passing of a wonderful, wonderful woman, Joan Glover. As all organizations will testify, Joan was the person to get to know, so things could get done. She was a tremendous help to all of us at the East Prince Seniors Initiative as we began. Joan, you were an exceptional woman. Thank You!
